“Look What You Made Me Do” has been making us do a lot of things — from to for the first time in decades. It inspired one fan to create the ultimate mash-up video for the song.
While Swift may have directly sampled the 1992 Right Said Fred hit, YouTube creator Andy Wu heard something a bit more toxic in the track.
Wu is widely popular for , and he wasted no time capitalizing on the release of Taylor Swift’s latest music video. On Monday, only one day after the video debuted on MTV’s Video Music Awards, Wu dropped a mash-up of the new Swift single and Britney Spears’ Grammy-winning hit “Toxic.”
Flitting between footage from both videos, Wu capitalizes on Swift’s willingness to play with her identity and mock various iterations of herself, which parallels nicely with Spears’ shifting identities as a spy in the “Toxic” video. Similarly, shots of Swift in a bathtub full of diamonds transition well with the iconic imagery of Britney’s nude diamond body suit.
The opening of the mash-up pairs Britney’s catchphrase, “It’s Britney, bitch” with Swift’s own “Don’t call me that” from the conclusion of her latest video.
“Look What Made You Do”‘s driving beat dominates the sound of the mash-up, while “Toxic”‘s haunting, witchy strings provide a perfect underscore to Swift’s graveyard imagery and the notion that the old Taylor is dead.
