ERIE, Pa. — More than 3,000 people were expected at Beach One on Presque Isle State Park Wednesday night for the first concert of the UPMC Sunset Music Series, including pets.

“We’ve been cooped up for six months for winter,” said who visited with several friends and her 4-year-old ball python named Picasso. “This is the first night we’ve had a night out and the live music. So, what a better way to enjoy the sunshine and to celebrate summer, finally?!”

Some families make it a summer tradition.

“It’s like one of our favorite things about Erie in the summertime,” said Matt Levy, of Fairview, who visited with his wife and two sons. “These things are amazing. The music’s great, and it’s a great excuse to get out on the beach on a weeknight.”

The six-week concert series kicked off with two bands, The Vehicle and Blue Sky.

“And the band’s awesome, because I know the guys. Eric, he’s the guitarist, and the drummer is Steve. He’s my drum teacher,” said Jared Butler, 17, of Erie.

Food vendors will include Connie’s Ice Cream, J’s Mainstreet and Voodoo Brewery Erie.

Some people took advantage of free hula hoop lessons from professional dancer Jennifer Dennehy, which will be offered during the event, from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Additionally, proceeds from raffles will benefit the Presque Isle Partnership to protect the peninsula and enhance the visitor experience.

“Because this concert is free, we have these giveaways to raise money for the park,” said Jon DeMarco, executive director of Presque Isle Partnership.

He added, “So, not only do you get a great show–you get to hang out here on the beach, but you get a beautiful sunset at the end of the night. And really, what more could we ask for?!”
