After about two decades of silence, Hampstead’s Main Street Memorial Park will rock again as Music in the Park returns for a summer of jams under the stars.

The concert series will feature a new performer for a free concert the first Saturday of each month, with Black Swan taking the stage June 3, In the Red performing July 1, Just Us performing Aug. 5 and Dick Merryman and the Country Express performing Sept. 2.

According to Wayne Thomas, who is organizing the series alongside the Hampstead Train Station Committee, the series was popular back in the 1990s as a Sunday concert series. Unfortunately as organizers left the Town Council, new volunteers never rose to replace them. Now, with Hampstead’s Main Street projects underway, Thomas said it was the perfect time to bring the concerts back.

“We were throwing ideas around on how to get people to come downtown,” Thomas said. “Somebody asked the simple question, ‘Why don’t we do music in the park?'”

In selecting the bands for the series, Thomas said they went local for each of the groups, with former Hampstead Mayor Lewis Keyser performing with Just Us.

“He lives just across the street from the firehouse. You can’t get any more local than Main Street,” Thomas said.
