In just a matter of weeks, Spider-Man: Homecoming will enter theaters thanks to the combined forces of Sony and Marvel Studios. The companies teamed up for a groundbreaking deal to share Spider-Man on the big screen, but fans still feel shaky about how long the MCU will have the hero. Earlier this year, conflicting reports surfaced about whether Sony would try to take Spider-Man out of Marvel’s franchise once moviegoers grew accustomed to the hero. But, according to one director, there’s no such plan in place.

Recently, the director of Spider-Man: Homecoming spoke to crowds at Sydney’s Supanova Comic Con about his Marvel venture. Jon Watts addressed fans via video chat, and he even clarified what he thinks is up with Spider-Man following on producer’s controversial statements about his future.

“I don’t think she [Amy Pascal] meant that in an apocalyptic way. I think she was just trying to say what an unprecedented deal [it was] that Marvel and Sony teamed up,” Watts explained.

“It’s like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I think that is what she was trying to say as opposed to putting a ticking clock [on Spider-Man].”

In the past, Pascal casted doubt over Spider-Man’s longterm placement in the MCU when the Sony producer spoke with Collider. During an interview, she appeared to imply Sony’s deal with Marvel Studios will run up following the Homecoming sequel unless renegotiations were entered into.

“One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don’t have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often. In fact it may never happen again, after we do the sequel. Because Sony, and Disney, and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was to allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film,” Pascal explained.

So far, it looks like Sony will benefit from Spider-Man’s placement in the MCU. First reactions for the hero’s upcoming standalone hit the Internet recently, and they claimed the Spider-Man movie is the one all fans have been waiting for. Still, there are particulars which Sony and Marvel must work out moving forward. If Spider-Man: Homecoming gets the box office traction experts predict, then it will prove that the MCU has a golden touch which just can’t be beat. And, unless Sony can find a way to steal the franchise’s recipe, the Spider-Man may be better off sticking with the Avengers.

Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) returns home to live with his Aunt May. Under the watchful eye of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man. He also tries to return to his normal daily routine — distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just a friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter must soon put his powers to the test when the evil Vulture emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7, 2017.
