An 18-year-old Eastern Michigan University student was shot and killed early today in Ohio after shots rang out at what was described as a large party, officials said.
A news release from the university identified the student as Jayquon Tillman, a sophomore from Cleveland who was a member of the Delta Nu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
“It is with the deepest of sympathy that we mourn the death of Jayquon Tillman,” EMU President James Smith said in a statement. “Our heartfelt thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time of grief and sorrow. We stand by to offer whatever support the University can provide to all of those who cared for him and loved him.”
Tillman also was part of the Kings of Color student organization at EMU, the school said, and he was involved in Washtenaw County My Brothers Keeper as a member of its Young Brother’s Leadership Council.
A spokesman for the Portage County Sheriff’s Department, which responded to the scene, did not return a request for comment Saturday night.
The university news release, quoting the sheriff’s office, said Tillman and a young woman were shot at a home in Franklin Township, near Kent State University. The release identified the woman as Kalin Cheyenne Lee, 20, of Columbus, Ohio. She was treated and released from a hospital, the release said.
