CLEVELAND, Ohio — The three-part PBS music documentary “American Epic” concludes tonight with “Out of the Many, the One.” Narrated by Robert Redford, tonight’s episode focuses on:
- The Hopi Indians and their ceremonial Snake Dance
- Inventor of the steel guitar, John Kekuku, and the huge influence this instrument had on the world of American music
- Bluesman Mississippi John Hurt, a 1920s self-taught guitarist whose music had a brisk resurgence in the 1960s
- Mexican singer/songwriter Lydia Mendoza, whose hit song “Mal Hombre” (Cold Hearted Man) may be one of the earliest female empowerment songs in recorded music history.
“American Epic” airs May 30 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
