A gray whale with what appears to be a meal frame caught on its head has been spotted off California’s southern coast, and a government agency has asked for help in tracking it.
The tangled whale was spotted swimming north near Dana Point, Calif. on Saturday, April 1, according to the Associated Press. People on a whale-watching tour spotted it about two miles offshore.
The National Marine Fisheries Service has asked boaters to report any sightings of animal.
In 2016, off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California – as well as in neighboring countries with gear from U.S. fisheries. It’s the highest annual total for that area since the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries division began keeping records in 1982.
