Another pay-per-view card, another submission victory for Cynthia Calvillo.
The Team Alpha Male strawweight, who had a successful UFC debut at UFC 209 with a first-round submission of Amanda Cooper, swung right back into action at UFC 210 on Saturday night and made it 2-for-2.
The undefeated Calvillo overwhelmed a game Pearl Gonzalez before finally getting the finish late in the third round. A rear-naked choke ended things at 3:45 of the third round.
“I’m not surprised, motherf***er,” Gonzalez said, stealing a famous line.
In the opening round, Gonzalez took an unorthodox approach of covering up her head with her hands and trying to goad Calvillo into punching herself out. Just as Gonzalez opened up, though, Calvillo got her to the mat and sunk in a tight triangle. Gonzalez was saved by the horn.
Calvillo convincingly won the second round, but Gonzalez, who garnered headlines Friday after she was nearly pulled from the bout by the New York State Athletic Commission over her breast implants, toughed it out once again.
“I mean, I just, I love the ground,” Calvillo said. “It’s my ocean, I’m a shark.”
Finally, in the third, Calvillo wore down Gonzalez enough to get the finish, as the San Diego Combat Academy fighter tapped.
Calvillo improved to 6-0 with her fourth career submission win. Gonzalez dropped to 6-2 and had a six-fight winning streak snapped.
