Finally, a President for President’s Day. Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22, Washington’s actual day of birth, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers.
While several states still have, individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and other figures, President’s Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present .
For a while, I started to think the role of the presidency was nothing but a dog and pony show with no real power. I even wrote about it in February of 2010 when I wrote “I don’t believe we need a president for anything more than window dressing. The position just seems meaningless to me. It has become a lot of sound and fury, but it signifies nothing but a distraction for the system of self-governance.”
Looking back at that, I guess I was feeling the effects of the do-nothing or accomplish-little Obama presidency. Today in 2017, I am once again reminded how “HUGE” the presidency is. Nearly a decade of Democrat rule left me with a feeling of malaise. Obama and the Democrats called it the “new normal” and after a while, it felt perennial. Now we have a dynamic president who is once again reminding us how exciting the presidency can be.
In less than one month, we have seen a president who can move Heaven and Earth getting things done with unprecedented opposition. If the same people can just pull their heads out of the sands of Trump Derangement Syndrome, they might just notice things are moving forward. They will see the dawn of an exciting new time ahead. It is morning again in America and we are at the beginning of a great journey of renewal and prosperity. America is going to go for a ride and it will be fantastical and grand.
When everything is said and done, we will stand in the shadow of a historic presidency eight years from now. We will collectively look back and realize, President Donald Trump accomplished amazing things. History will show, that this president was great. I think this is the first time this holiday actually meant something to many of us. I have such great hope. I already see the signs, idiosyncrasies and all.
